CarerHelp is now offering carers the opportunity to attend online sessions with a health professional to help them better prepare for end of life caring. There are 3 sessions to choose from depending on circumstances and the sessions are conducted online so carers can participate in their own homes.
Why is CarerHelp offering online sessions?
While factsheets and videos offer a lot of information, we recognise that not everyone wants to read a factsheet or look through a website to find information. For some people, receiving an overview from a health professional is a more effective way to receive information, and also allows an opportunity for carers to feel more supported and have questions answered. They can also see that others are experiencing the same types of challenges.
We also know that many people do not have access to a health professional that could provide this type of information directly to them. Particularly, people living in rural areas may have limited access to specialist palliative care or grief services. CarerHelp is bringing the palliative care professional and grief specialist to carers across Australia.
What sessions are available?
There are 3 sessions which are repeated each month for the remainder of 2025 (new dates will be added each month). Carers can register for whichever session suits them best.
Session 1: Preparing for caring as illness advances
This session helps carers understand the role of caring for someone with a life-limiting illness, what services and resources are available to help, how to have end of life conversations and plan ahead, and prioritises self-care while caring.
Session 2: Preparing for the last few weeks
This session focuses on what to expect in the last weeks including the physical symptoms a person is likely to experience and how them to offer care and comfort. It will help carers to recognise dying and provide practical information about what to do during and following the death.
Session 3: Living beyond loss: Finding your way through grief
This session offers guidance and support to help carers navigate grief, understand its’ effects, and find ways to care for themselves while honouring their loved one’s memory.
What do people say about the online sessions?
Following the first of each session, we asked participants to tell ushow they found the session. The response has been positive in helping people feel more prepared. Here is what carers said:
“It was good to get all the information in one place. I feel more prepared.”
“It helped me understand my grief and feel better about my grief.”
“The sessions are a brilliant resource.”
“The session was good. The information was great. I could relate to the emotions that the presenter spoke about.”
